Learning Path

Finance & Analytics

Model, audit, and explain the numbers with AI copilots you can actually reconcile, then ship a self-updating month-end pack.

Beginner-friendly12 modules~4h 22m total6 tools

Finish with: A board deck carried from the model via the Claude add-in, plus a runbook (prompts, source file, reconciliation check) and a one-page AI policy with sign-off rules

Who this path is for

FP&A analysts, finance managers, and controllers who own the models, the dashboards, and the month-end close.

Month-end eats the week: rebuilding the same variance schedules, hunting a broken link across a 14-tab model, and rewriting board commentary that says what the numbers already show. The analysis takes an hour; reconciling, formatting, and explaining it takes the other four days.

Build next: Build a self-updating month-end pack: one governed Power BI dashboard plus the variance commentary, both regenerating from a single refreshed actuals file.

Outcomes

What you'll be able to do

  • An audited three-statement model plus a reusable build spec, checked cell by cell with Shortcut, Claude for Excel, and Excel Copilot
  • A variance commentary factory: a prompt-template library that drafts driver commentary per business unit, every number reconciled to your control totals
  • A self-updating month-end pack where one governed dashboard and its narrative regenerate from a single refreshed actuals source
Curriculum

What you'll actually build

12 modules, ~4h 22m of hands-on work. Every lesson centers on one tool and ends with a deliverable you keep.

Set your reconcile-first rule and lock the privacy tier

A one-page reconciliation checklist and a confirmed privacy setup (Business/Enterprise verified, or training toggled off on a personal plan), so no AI number ships unchecked and no close data trains a model

Start here

Your first three actions

  1. Have Excel Copilot audit your three-statement model for broken links and formula inconsistencies
  2. Paste last month's actuals against budget into Claude and have it draft the variance commentary for the board deck
  3. Rebuild one recurring spreadsheet report as a Power BI dashboard that refreshes on new data

Workflows you'll actually run

  • Build and audit a three-statement model in Excel Copilot, then have it flag the cells where the balance sheet stops tying
  • Automate variance analysis in ChatGPT: paste actuals against budget and get the biggest drivers ranked with plain-language reasons
  • Turn a raw transaction export into a governed Tableau dashboard where every measure has one definition, so revenue means the same thing on every view
Common traps

Where people go wrong

Trusting the number Excel Copilot or ChatGPT hands back
Ask Excel Copilot to expose the formula in each cell and reconcile the output against a total you already know before anyone sees it.
Buying Power BI and Tableau and expecting the tool to supply the insight
Define the question and the metric before you build; a Tableau dashboard on a messy data model is just a faster way to be wrong.
Your first week

Your 7-day starting plan

A practical first week to get one real workflow running. Not a full roadmap, a place to start.

  1. Time your close

Log which parts of month-end actually eat your hours, the variance schedules, the hunt for a broken link, the board commentary, so you aim AI at the four-day reconciling tail and not the one-hour analysis.

  2. Pick one task

Choose a single recurring job you rebuild from scratch every month, one variance schedule or one board-commentary paragraph, and ignore the rest of the close for now.

  3. Build a first pass

Build one draft with a single tool: paste last month's actuals against budget into Claude for the variance commentary, or point Excel Copilot at your model to flag broken links and formula inconsistencies.

  4. Run it live

Run that workflow on this month's real close, not a toy file, and reconcile every number the model hands back against a control total you already know before anyone sees it.

  5. Tighten the output

Fix where the draft was vague or wrong: feed Claude your metric definitions and last quarter's commentary, ask Excel Copilot to expose the formula in each cell, or feed Claude for Excel your metric definitions so it reasons over your real numbers.

  6. Write the runbook

Save the exact prompts, the source file, and the reconciliation check as a short runbook, so next month starts from a template instead of a blank cell.

  7. Pick the next piece

Choose one more part of the month-end pack to build, like rebuilding a recurring spreadsheet report as a Power BI or Tableau dashboard that refreshes on new data, and leave the rest for later.

Progress signals

How you know you're improving

  • Your variance commentary needs fewer edits before it goes in the deck; you are tightening the model's draft, not rewriting it.
  • You reconcile the AI's numbers out of reflex, and they tie to your control total on the first try more often than not.
  • Month-end takes fewer days because the reconciling-and-formatting tail shrank, not because you skipped a check.
